Next Thursday is the 2nd TRASK Art Show & Sale, benefitting the restoration of the Spencer Trask Memorial. If that doesn’t ring a bell, you might know our city’s iconic Spirit of Life sculpture, which is the centerpiece of the beautiful memorial in Congress Park and a landmark feature for Saratoga. The Spirit of Life, “Spit and Spat”, and the racetrack are probably the three most recognizable images for Saratoga. That is why it is so important that this memorial be restored- so it may continue to represent Saratoga’s rich, Victorian heritage and art legacy. The TRASK Art Show and Sale is a unique benefit and a great way to see and purchase work by established and emerging artists in our area. All pieces are available for sale, via silent and live auction during the event, and 50- 100% of the revenue generated will go towards this important restoration project (the artists choose whether to donate 50 or 100%, making it easier for them to contribute as well). Price points range from $50 to $4,000, so this is a great way to start collecting, furnish your home, AND give back to the community in a way that is accessible for everyone.
{A little background}
Dedicated to her husband, Spencer, Katrina Trask commissioned this memorial after his untimely and tragic death. Katrina also founded Yaddo and another artist’s colony on Lake George. Needless to say, the Trasks were great patrons of the arts and helped establish Saratoga as an “arts” destination. It is appropriate that the “Spirit of Life” has become so representative of Saratoga’s artistic heritage.
The best part of this show is that the art work really spans the spectrum of style and media. This is also a juried show, so it will be interesting to see who takes the cake!I will certainly be there with bells on!
